Comunication and Social Status

Doernberg, Sarah B., et al. “Agonistic Behavior in Naïve Juvenile Lobsters Depleted of Serotonin by 5,7-Dihydroxytryptamine - Journal of Comparative Physiology A.” SpringerLink, Springer-Verlag, March 2001, link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s003590000178.

Sarah doernberg, UCSF Associate Professor, is a leading researcher in diagnosis and treatment of antibiotic resistant infections. She she co-authored “Agonistic behavior in naïve juvenile lobsters depleted of serotonin by 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine,” which was published in The Journal of physiology A. The study uses various groups of wild lobsters. Specifically, it looked at groups of lobsters given doses of anti serotonin. The study found an incredibly complex pattern of aggression and fighting behavior. Her reports are very well-cited. As such, this study is used to show how we are evolutionarily linked to these invertebrates. Ultimately, this study allows me to connect my other two studies by displaying relation to human emotion and behaviors.

Agonistic behavior

Shabani, Shkelzen, et al. “Spiny Lobsters Use Urine-Borne Olfactory Signaling and Physical Aggressive Behaviors to Influence Social Status of Conspecifics.” The Company of Biologists, The Company of Biologists, 1 Aug. 2009, journals.biologists.com/jeb/article/212/15/2464/18436/Spiny-lobsters-use-urine-borne-olfactory-signaling.

Zeni Shabani, Assisstant Professor of anatomy and physiology at Grand Valley State University, he is leading researcher in  genetic risks of drug use disorders and the associated neural substrates that influence specific aspects of drug use writing “Spiny lobsters use urine-borne olfactory signaling and physical aggressive behaviors to influence social status of conspecifics,” which was published in The Journal Of Experimental Biology, vol. 212, issue. 15. The study uses various groups of lobsters. The study measured the number of pulses of urine release and the duration of each, and the occurrence of aggressive and submissive behaviors. His reports are very well-cited. As such, this study is used to prove the chemical communication between lobsters. It is also useful in debunking the assumptions that are often made that lobsters are not conscious. Ultimately, this study allows me to interlink many subtopics such as social behavior in with communication.

KeyStone Species

Eddy, Tyler D., et al. “Lobsters as Keystone: Only in Unfished Ecosystems?” Ecological Modelling, Elsevier, 9 Jan. 2014, www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0304380013005851.

Taylor Eddy works for the Centre for Marine Environmental & Economic Research at the University of Wellington. He has written “Only in unfished ecosystems?,” which was published in Science Direct. The study looked at different fisheries globally to discover that they were contributing negatively towards the bio-mass of lobsters. It measured heavy fishing pressure, and corresponding changes in feeding behavior overtime. Ultimately, the study found that the fisheries were playing an important role in diminishing the population of lobsters thereby leaving many sea urchins populations to be left unattended. The reduction of lobster abundance by fisheries in these regions is therefore expected to have strong ecosystem impacts.

PROBLEMS

This page will feature the problems and sources that lobsters are facing

Fisheries

Milewski, Inka, et al. “Interactions between Finfish Aquaculture and American Lobster in Atlantic Canada.” Ocean & Coastal Management, Elsevier, 16 May 2021, www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0964569121001484?via%3Dihub.

Inka Milewski is a research assisstant for the department of biology at Dalhousie University. Her work involves dealing with impacts of human activities as well as with fisheries with the goal being to improve the management and inform the public. She co-authored, "Interactions between finfish aquaculture and American lobster in Atlantic Canada". The study looks at how lobsters are being negatively affected by the presence of fisheries. These fisheries or farms generate waste and pesticides which are destroying lobster habitats, negatively impacting the growth and development, decreasing the water quality, and the decreasing the lobster habitats. This will be useful in talking about the harmful practices of the fishing industry as by mass producing loads of fish the side effect of that is it harms other sea life... in this case lobsters as all of that excess waste comes to the bottom of the sea where they live.

Ghost Traps

Canfield, Clarke. “Lost Traps Posing a Threat to Maine’s Lobster Industry.” Boston.com, The Boston Globe, 27 Nov. 2009, archive.boston.com/news/local/maine/articles/2009/11/27/lost_traps_posing_a_threat_to_maines_lobster_industry/.

Clark Canfield was former a former reporter for the associated press and a journalist in New England. In the article, "Lost traps posing a threat to Maine’s lobster industry" he discusses the problems with lobster "ghost traps" in Maine. They are left at the bottom of the ocean and never usually recovered. The problem with that for lobsters is many lobsters are still found left over in these traps suffering from health conditions or dead because they can't manage to escape them. I can use this problem to look at the environmental side effects of these left over traps that are trashed at the bottom of the ocean. It may be the case that not animals are trapped inside but it is still polluting the ocean and can cause other animals in the future to get tangled in there.

PETA

“Lobsters and Crabs Used for Food.” PETA, 26 Sept. 2020, www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-food/factory-farming/fish/lobsters-crabs/.

PETA is an organization that advocates for the ethical treatment of animals. The article and exposé youtube video of lobsters being dismembered and killed shows the problem of lobsters being used for food. The first would be the ethical question to answer of if it is even right to eat lobster? Since these creatures are sentient and feeling creatures PETA doesn't think so. I think that I can incorporate this into my discussion of Pain that lobsters feel and the extent to which our demand of lobster is leading them to have a very painful and gruesome death.

SOLUTIONS

GOMFL Cleaning Up the Trash

Foundation, Gulf of Maine Lobster. “10 Years and 4 Million Pounds of Ghost Gear Removed from the Ocean. Now a New Bin in Portland to Collect More! Thanks to All of You for Supporting GEARGRAB All These Years. #Ghostgear #Marinedebris #Gulfofmaine @Noaadebris @Nfwfnews Https://T.co/esn68wht6g.” Twitter, Twitter, 27 Aug. 2019, twitter.com/GOMLF/status/1166431937113853952.

The Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to protecting and sustaining a healthy lobster fisheries. They achieve this by being the only organization to do this at sea trap recovery work without the need of a special permit. The organization is trying to clean up this problem that is leaving many lobsters to get trapped in as well as polluting the water. They have implemented community oriented clean up, recycling and gear collection programs, and offered stipends for the many volunteers that help keep main’s shores clean. Because of this action more animals are safe off the coast of Maine.

Grass Roots Pledges

“Take Action to Help Crabs and Lobsters Today.” PETA Headlines, 19 May 2022, headlines.peta.org/help-crabs-lobsters-take-action-for-crustaceans/#Actionnaires.

Pledges like this, created by PETA makes it quick and easy to say no to eating crabs and lobsters who are being harmed by their #1 predator, us. I think that it is important to not only make that choice with our dollars but also to take the time to collectively join others in solidarity who have joined to respect the lives of these creatures. The reasoning behind the petition is that lobsters feel pain, and are suffering due to the conditions of being sold. Therefore, we should not have forced speciesism on these creatures.

Government Action

Pallotta, Nicole. “Switzerland Bans Practice of Boiling Lobsters Alive Without Stunning First.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 13 Feb. 2018, www.britannica.com/explore/savingearth/switzerland-bans-practice-of-boiling-lobsters-alive-without-stunning-first.

Switzerland has decided to ban the practice of Boiling lobsters alive without stunning them first. They have also decided to ban transporting or stocking these live crustaceans on ice as they have found that these practices are inhumane. This country has put the most amount of restrictions out of any other country. These restrictions are a great step towards ensuring animals are given rights, especially ones that are sentient and feel pain. This shows that the problem is being recognized by governments who are trying to give some autonomy over the animals that are being subject to harmful practices.
