First Article:
Shabani, Shkelzen, et al. “Spiny Lobsters Use Urine-Borne Olfactory Signaling and Physical Aggressive Behaviors to Influence Social Status of Conspecifics.” The Journal of Experimental Biology, vol. 212, no. 15, 30 Apr. 2009, pp. 2464–2474.
I found this article by using the Academic Search Complete. I put into the search the key words of lobster + social behavior or lobsters + social communication. In this study, the research that was done to better understand the type of behavior that spiny Caribbean lobsters displays. The methods that they used to understand this behavior was through analyzing the physically aggressive or submissive behaviors relationship of the lobsters through the presence of urine. The conclusion that the writers made based on their findings was that the more dominant lobster would become aggressive or spray their urine on the submissive lobster to portray their social status. The less aggressive lobsters would then respond by being more avoidant or suppress their own urine and appetite. This study helps us better understand the social hierarchies that are formed within lobster societies.
Second Article:
Dolan, Thomas W., et al. “Host Behavior Alters Spiny Lobster--Viral Disease Dynamics: a Simulation Study.” Ecological Society of America , vol. 95, no. 8, 1 Aug. 2014, pp. 2346–2361.
I found this article by the keywords as well. I used google scholar first to look up the key words and then also on the Academic Search Complete. In this study, it is a combination of a research study and a literary review. The author is summarizing the contact transmission of disease, the effects of the disease being spread, and the lobster changing behavior in response to the disease. The author uses the studies of other researcher's for context in his research to make it more of a precise study.
What I've learned through following the steps of this activity is how to properly cite a source from the online data base. I have also learned that there are plenty of resources available online that will be helpful for me in writing my LR and AP. This activity showed me the exact steps that I need to follow in order to search for articles that I think would be valuable resources for my writings. I also think that in doing the Literary Review assignment, that it made it easier to know where to look for relevant information in the articles.
